The European Parliament vote on funding for the environment and climate action will help protect the environment and mitigate climate change, supporting a clean energy transition with increased energy efficiency and a higher share of renewables in the energy mix.

This will be one of the tools enabling the European Union to meet its climate goals and seek to become climate-neutral by 2050.

“The public demands and expects action on the environmental challenges we face, and the LIFE program helps us to take that much-needed action,” EU Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Commissioner Karmenu Vella said welcoming the vote. “It plays a crucial role in identifying how best to transform our economies to meet the needs of the 21st Century and to tackle problems such as nature degradation, air and water pollution and waste creation and disposal,” he added.

Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete added: “As Europe goes climate neutral, this program will play a key role in unlocking the necessary investments in climate action and sustainable energy across Europe. With an increased focus on clean energy, energy efficiency and climate change mitigation, the new LIFE program will contribute to improve the daily lives of Europeans.”
