The European Commission Tuesday said it has cleared French energy giant Total SA (TOT) and Russia's OAO Novatek (NVTK.RS) to obtain joint control of Yamal LNG, a company that will undertake exploration and production of oil and natural gas in Russia.

"The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure," the commission said in a statement, meaning that it doesn't expect the operation to create any specific antitrust concerns.
