Russia 's gas-export monopoly Thursday rejected a Ukrainian proposal to cut sharply the amount of gas it purchases from Russia .

OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) said in a statement that according to a ten-year contract it signed in 2009 with
Ukraine 's Naftogaz, neither side can unilaterally change the annual amount of gas purchased by Ukraine by more than 20%. Gazprom said Ukraine is expected to take 52 billion cubic meters of gas in 2012 and thus can't cut its purchases to 27 billion cubic meters.

A Ukrainian official Wednesday had said the country would insist on cutting Russian gas imports to 27 billion cubic meters in 2012, well below 2011 levels.
