Serbia's government may lift the existing nuclear energy ban in the country to allow the construction of modular reactors, energy minister Zorana Mihajlovic said on Monday

"We have a moratorium on the construction of nuclear power plants that was introduced after the Chernobyl disaster, which was completely understandable at the time, but it all has changed since 1986," Mihajlovic said, as seen in a video file posted on the website of news agency Tanjug.

Serbia has still not opened talks on the operation of modular nuclear reactors on its territory but is considering all options that would guarantee its energy stability, Mihajlovic said.

"Renewable energy and large hydropower plants are not enough [...] We will be gradually reducing the production of thermal power plants in the years to come and we will need to build additional power capacity," she added.

In November, Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic said the country is considering the construction of a nuclear power plant in cooperation with Russia's Rosatom. The largest obstacle before the construction of a nuclear power plant in Serbia is the financing, Vucic said back then.

Rosatom signed in December an agreement to participate in the construction of a centre for nuclear science and technology in Serbia to produce radioisotopes for medical and industrial purposes, doped silicon for various industries, and material composition tests of ores, minerals, and environmental samples.
