Japan's coking coal imports declined slightly in May from April but held well above year-ago levels, supported by the country's economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, while metallurgical coke imports fell from a record high in April

Japan imported 5.05mn t of coking coal in May, down by 1pc from April but up by 9pc from a year earlier, according to finance ministry data. January-May imports fell by 6pc from a year earlier to 26.1mn t.

Seaborne coking coal prices surged by 41.5pc on the month to $151.60/t fob in May ahead of expected tighter Australian coal supplies. The Argus' spot price assessment for premium low-volatile hard coking coal averaged $124.70/t fob Australia in May, up by 12.2pc from $111.11/t in April.
