The consortium plans to start operation in 2023 of the Hollandse Kust (Zuid) III and IV wind farms, which will be situated 20 kilometers off the coast of The Hague in the Netherlands, according to the partners' statement. The wind farms are expected to have a total installed capacity of about 760 megawatts -- enough green energy to supply around 1 million households.
"Collaboration is crucial to achieve the energy transition and all partners in Witwind have a proven track record of successfully collaborating in the development and operation of offshore wind farms," the press release read.
"The specific geographical location of the Netherlands is ideal for offshore wind electricity generation. This offers globally competitive advantages in terms of cost benefits, a specialized workforce and export opportunities for the Netherlands," it added. Marjan van Loon, president director of Shell Netherlands, said Shell wants to play an active role in the Dutch energy transition.
"Offshore wind will play an important role in the future energy system of the Netherlands and we would be happy to grow our offshore wind portfolio in the Netherlands building on the experience gained in Borssele III & IV and Offshore Windpark Egmond aan Zee," she added. Eneco CEO Ruud Sondag said the construction and operation of these new wind farms in the North Sea would ensure that more people are able to benefit from clean electricity generated in the Netherlands. Van Oord is a leading international contractor specializing in dredging, marine engineering and offshore projects including oil, gas and wind.
