U.S.-based GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) completed the segmentation of reactor internals at Sweden's Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) unit 2, the company announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the company, GEH dismantled, segmented and packed reactor internals of the boiling water reactor that closed in 2015. All handling and segmentation of reactor internals was carried out underwater, the company said.

The plant operator OKG AB awarded GEH a three-year contract in Dec. 2016 to dismantle the reactor internals of units 1 and 2. GEH also said that the dismantling and segmentation of reactor internals at unit 1, which closed in 2017, will continue.

Segmentation of the reactor internals of Oskarsham unit 1 is set to begin in 2019, while the segmentation project is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2020.

"Removal and disposal of reactor internals takes place directly after de-fueling of the units in order to simplify further decommissioning and improve the environment in the plant," said Johan Dasht, chief executive officer and managing director for OKG AB. "We supported our customer with strong project execution and completed this work for the plant on schedule and on budget," said Lance Hall, executive vice president of GEH.
