Libya is ensuring that Tobruk's oil terminal--which hasn't functioned for several weeks--is safe from a technical, operational standpoint before exports from the port resume in the coming days, a top oil official said Wednesday, in an example of rare progress for the country's embattled oil sector.

The news comes as the country's National Oil Co. confirmed a refinery at this oil complex had resumed production Monday, despite a vow by a local militia leader to keep oil facilities closed in Eastern Libya . The blockade by the militia leader has reduced Libya 's oil production and exports to a trickle.

The oil official, who declined to be named, said "we are securing the terminal." The latter normally exports 50,000 barrels a day, according to the International Energy Agency.
