The European Union's antitrust authority said Wednesday it has approved state aid totalling 1.95 billion Polish zlotys ($601 million) that will help fund the building of gas pipelines in Poland .

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said the project was in line with EU state aid rules because it "will further EU energy goals without unduly distorting competition in the internal market."

Poland notified the commission in March of its plans to grant aid to GAZ-SYSTEM, the state-owned gas transmission system operator, to fund a new network of gas pipelines.

"As the pipelines will have a higher transmission capacity, it will be possible to give network access to a greater number of gas suppliers, in line with the principle of "Third Party Access" defined in EU internal market rules," the commission said.
