Royal Dutch Shell PLC's (RDSA) Nigerian unit Thursday said it has shut the Trans-Niger Pipeline, or TNP, following reports of new leaks, barely 10 days after the repair of punctures in the pipeline caused by thieves syphoning off crude oil.

The closure of the pipeline Wednesday, Oct. 9 has resulted in the transport of 150,000 barrels of oil a day being deferred, Precious Okolobo, a Shell spokesman said in a statement.

"Shell Petroleum Development Co. shut the line as a precautionary measure after receiving reports of the incidents and has also mobilized a spill response team," Mr. Okolobo said.

A joint investigation visit will be conducted "as soon as possible" to determine the cause and impact of the spills, he said. The latest leaks were reported at B-Dere, Nonwa-Tai and Bodo West all in Ogoni land, he added.

The TNP has been repeatedly targeted and closed down five times since early July due to multiple leaks from crude theft connections, Shell has previously said.

The TNP, which carries 150,000 barrels of oil a day through the Niger Delta to the Bonny Export terminal, was also shut down on July 11, according to Shell.
