“Fit for 2030” or “Fit for 55” – the European Commission’s new “Climate Target Plan 2030” has already had many names. What is much more important than the name is the content of the legislative package that has been presented, which aims to achieve a 55 percent reduction in climate-damaging emissions by 2030.

Right from the start, it must be said that this package, which is 3,000 pages in length, will not limit global warming to 1.5 ° on its own. It is, however, a start to cutting CO2 emissions on a global scale. The package comprises a total of 12 legislative proposals, the contents of which must now be agreed upon by the European Parliament, together with the Commission and the bloc’s 27 members.
