The components will be used for the fabrication of nuclear fuel for the Argentinian-designed multipurpose reactor ETRR-2. The reactor will be used for various research in particle physics, materials engineering, and nuclear medicine, as well as for the production of stable isotopes at the country’s Nuclear Research Center, the company said. Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant (NCCP), an enterprise of TVEL, manufactured the components, which were shipped under several contracts signed earlier in 2018 between NCCP and the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority.
Oleg Grigoriyev, senior vice president for Commerce and International Business at TVEL, hailed the project as an accomplishment resulting from the efficient cooperation between the customer's and the supplier's project teams for what the company considers is a promising market in Egypt.
"In 2017, TVEL's contract for nuclear fuel supplies to the future El Dabaa NPP [nuclear power plant] came into force. The contract covers supplies to all four power units of El Dabaa plant with the total capacity of 4,800 MW [megawatt] during the entire operation period. Furthermore, the Central Design and Technological Institute, another TVEL's subsidiary, is involved in construction of the storage facility for spent nuclear fuel from El Dabaa NPP as a design subcontractor," he added.
In accordance with the intergovernmental agreement signed in November 2015, Rosatom will build Egypt's first nuclear power plant, consisting of four VVER-1200 power reactors, at the El Dabaa site located in the Matrouh region on the Mediterranean coast. Russia will also supply nuclear fuel throughout the plant's entire lifetime and will train Egypt's nuclear industry specialists, who will work in the nuclear power sector.
