Moldova's government said on Wednesday a gas pipeline linking Romania and
Moldova will be put into operation at the end of August.
The gas pipeline
links the Romanian city of Iasi to Ungheni in Moldova and will provide Moldova
with access to natural gas from the common European market, as an alternative to
Russian supplies, the cabinet said in a statement.
The Moldovan
government has decided to set up a state-owned company, Vestmoldtransgaz, which
will operate the Moldovan section of the pipeline.
The Iasi-Ungheni
pipeline has a total length of 43.2 kilometres, including 32.2 kilometres in
Romania, and will carry 1.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas per
year.
The city of Iasi is located in northeastern Romania, while
Moldova's Ungheni is situated near the border between the two countries.
